Counselling is for you, too!
There are many taboos surrounding counselling; here are a few I’ve heard in the last 6 months:
– People like me don’t have counselling
– It’s only for rich people
– I don’t want to tell anyone my business
– I’m afraid of being judged
– I don’t want to become dependent on someone else to solve my problems
The list goes on……
I am from a culture that has strong views about sharing personal experiences with strangers, or with anyone for that matter. We are encouraged to hold our head up and trust in the Lord or ‘sort ourself out’.
I personally never found this very helpful. I am of the mindset that, ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’. Counselling is based on empathy, trust and confidentiality. From personal experience I know that talking therapies help to understand repeated patterns of behaviour, our moods, culture and identity.
It is through this understanding that we make adjustments, develop acceptance, become resilient and gain knowledge about the person we are and the person we want to become and therefore enable change.
